Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk Blade Review

Butterfly introduced a new quality defensive table tennis blade inspired by one of the most popular and successful defensive players, Joo Se Hyuk, from Korea. He had a significant role in helping the Butterfly research department to develop this unique table tennis paddle.
The blade has a large defensive range so that it is easy for you to do the spin. It gives you continuous power when you are playing numerous attacks. It is suitable for counter-attack type of players.
This blade has a combination of modern offense and defense. The surface of the Joo Se Hyuk blade is made from a tough wood material – Planchonello Wood.
The wood material also uses a harder Limba, and the core is the standard wood used in many blades, which is Ayous.
Judging the blade from the construction and knocking sound, it is more like a harder blade than the softer pine wood.

Despite its heavyweight (97 g), it has been regarded as one of the best defensive table tennis blades in the market for the modern defensive style. It offers you decent control with the necessary speed for defensive and counter-attack play style.

The highlight of this blade is its chopping ability. Regardless of its weight, this is the best blade for an aggressive chop. It features an immense amount of backspin with relatively less effort to execute. Also, it comes with many gears that offer you full ranges of backspin weights.

Since this is a defensive blade, it is commonly used with long pimple rubbers, such as Butterfly Feint Long Series, to maximize its defensive ability. It is also excellent for blocking from mid to far distance. Once you master this blade, you will perform a splendid block like a pro!

For offensive play, this finest 5-ply blade is also reasonably great for topspin drive or even smash. It will help you to create a strong killer shot to punish your opponent’s mistake.

Overall, it is an excellent defensive blade with a slightly higher price than other defensive blades (approx USD$ 78). It is highly recommended for any defensive players.

Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk vs Butterfly Ishlion

The Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk can be said to be an enhanced version of pine wood. Based on maintaining good ball-control performance, the attack power is greatly improved.

The better arc design ensures the accuracy and continuity of counter-attack. The hard surface material and the force material ensure the attack power and significantly reduce the feeling of vibration. On the balance of offense and defense, The Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk has risen to a very high level.

In contrast, the Butterfly Ishlion is slimmer than the 5.7mm-thick Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk. The thickness of Butterfly Ishlion is only 5.3.

If Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk is slightly vibrating, then with the slim construction of the Butterfly Ishlion blade, you can find there is no vibration at all. The hand feels it is also excellent.

I tried using the Butterfly Ishlion with the Tackifire D rubber on my forehand. I observed the arc that it drives is lower and longer than Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk. The chances for the opponent to return the ball is lower than Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk.

From my playing experience, I can fee that the arc of Butterfly Ishlion is much different than Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk.

It is probably because the hardness of the Butterfly Ishlion is higher than the Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk, and the deformation is smaller than the later.

I tried to play the Butterfly Ishlion with the same Tackifire D rubber. I can feel that it is softer than Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk.

Although the Butterfly Ishlion’s offensive arc is even more bizarre, its low-level arc increases the mistake rate, so it is just not as good as Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk.

For the backhand, the dwell time of Butterfly Ishlion is not as good as Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk. It’s stability also not as good as Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk.

When doing a chop, the traction is excellent. And The hit rate of long rubber shots is also slightly higher than that of Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk. In this regard, the Butterfly Ishlion is more like a double-edged sword.

It is worth mentioning for the forehand chopping; I prefer Butterfly Ishlion. Although it is low in traction and the ball is fast, the forehand chop is smooth and precise. It is as sharp as a knife. In contrast, Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk has a slight feeling of not sharp enough.

Conclusion

In general, Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk and Butterly Ishlion both have distinct characteristics.

Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk emphasizes the balance of offense and defense, and the Butterfly Ishlion is more like a double-edged sword.

They have in common that the attack power is increased at the expense of the relative stability of the chopping. Compared with the traditional chopping blades, they put forward higher requirements for the skills of defensive players.
