In honor of the Swedish world champions, DONIC just presented this World Champion 89 wood.
It is 25 years since the Swedish legends won the World Championship title in Dortmund in a historic 5: 0 triumph in the final against China.
For this exceptional title gain, there are unique anniversary woods from DONIC.
A series of wood was produced with the latest technology and maximum precision, just as the three top blades made in Sweden.
An Italian veneer was selected as an outdoor veneer for all three versions.
The woods’ base is a 3.0 mm thick Kiri core, combined with an exclusive new CFZ fabric made of carbon fleece, with further veneers from Spruce and the Appelgren version with Ayous.
High-quality saw veneers were selected for the DONIC World Champion 89 instead of standard knife veneers to prevent the usual material fatigue and maintain more constant gaming characteristics over a considerably more extended period.
Exceptional stability and optimized wood weight was achieved by a unique drying process specially developed. It reduces the World Champion 89 wood’s moisture content by 8-12% to just 4%.
Within this framework, all woods pass through a unique cold pressing process for a day.
A perfectly rounded handle, which is also ideal from an ergonomic point of view, provides a unique 3D technology.
The DONIC World Champion 89 Persson OFF + is the fastest version for those who value high tempo and hardness.
If you are looking for a good compromise between speed and feeling, the DONIC World Champion 89 Waldner OFF will be a controlled yet fast wood blade for you.
The DONIC World Champion 89 Appelgren ALL + is the right choice for those who would like something more emotional. Here, the focus is on ball feeling and control in all play situations.

Appelgren All + World Champion 89
DONIC reviewed
- Control 7, tempo 10+
- Category: Off / Off +
- Elasticity: tempo-elastic
- Veneer thickness: 6, 9 mm
- Veneers: 7 layers: 3.0 mm Kiri / 0.55 mm Ayous / Carbonfleece- Zylon / 0.8 mm Spruce
- Weight: approx 80 g
In my opinion, this thickness is 5.3 – 5.5mm for all-round woods, 5.5 – 5.8mm for off and suitable off woods need not have much more than 6.0mm. The workmanship is top, and the grip is rather roundish thick (straight). The Waldner is already at the border to Off +.
Nevertheless, surprisingly good control in both active and passive game. All topspin techniques can easily be played with the blade. Both fast topspins and slower spins are easy to play. The wood is relatively stiff and has a distinct palpable characteristic.
Also very good at playing passive game with blocking characteristics. Balls are difficult to play with, which requires a particular sensitivity. I consider this wood a successful new development.
